Lima is often known for its grey and foggy winter, which lasts for about three months of the year. However, as the sun returns and the winter mist lifts, Lima enters its warm season. December is perhaps the ideal month to visit. The weather is sunny but not overly hot, and the festive atmosphere adds a layer of cheer to the city’s already welcoming character.

For foreign tourists, it’s also a lower season than the peak months of June and July. Consequently, prices are generally lower. If you’re looking for a good time to visit, December provides a perfect mix of comfortable weather and holiday spirit.

For a proper experience of all that Lima has to offer, you should consider staying for a 4 day Lima itinerary at a minimum. Yet a 7 day Lima itinerary is even better.

Travel Tip: The most perfect weather in Lima starts around mid October. And it extends all the way through until late March. So for the digital nomads, expats and those contemplating visiting Lima for an extended stay, it’s the perfect time of year.

The UNESCO Historic Center

The heart of Lima takes on a new glow in December. The Plaza Mayor (Plaza de Armas), the main square, becomes a central point for holiday displays. You can see a large Christmas tree and detailed nativity scenes set up for the season.

The government buildings and colonial architecture that surround the plaza are illuminated with festive lights, making an evening walk a must-do.

The atmosphere is calm and happy, with families and tourists enjoying the cool nights. It’s a great place to experience Peruvian Christmas traditions in a historic setting.

Discovering Pueblo Libre

Pueblo Libre is a major touristic district and is widely considered the cultural heart of Lima. In front of the National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology, and History of Peru (MNAAHP), Plaza Bolívar is decorated with nativity scenes and a large Christmas tree. Just nearby, Parque 3 de Octubre has small Santa houses, which are popular with children.

As the month progresses, local markets in Pueblo Libre begin to sell traditional Christmas foods, decorations, and fireworks. At night, the entire district sparkles as apartments and houses turn on their Christmas lights. It feels like a neighborhood celebration.

Pueblo Libre also has a very active cultural scene. The district is home to many cultural events, which visitors can find by checking local event programs.

A significant landmark is the Santa María Magdalena Church, which is Lima’s oldest rural church, built in 1557. This historic building, along with other sites like the Larco Museum and the Boulevard del Criollismo, regularly hosts events that provide a deeper look into the city’s heritage.

Travel Tip: Pueblo Libre is a highly walkable district. During the month of December, Peruvians will decorate everything possible with Christmas lights. So, definitely consider just leisurely walking around Pueblo Libre while you’re in Lima in December!

Barranco

In December, the seaside district of Barranco is at its best. The pleasant weather is perfect for walking along the seaside cliffs or down the Bajada de los Baños to the ocean. The streets, with their colorful murals and old mansions, feel even more alive in December.

Barranco has a festive feel, and its unique atmosphere is perfect for a warm evening stroll. Or a day sitting by the ocean eating ceviche.

Travel Tip: Consider also taking a 2.5 hr bus to Huacho, which is still in Lima. Huacho has an 8 beach circuit and is fantastic for swimming, fishing and eating ceviche by the ocean in the sun!

More to Do in Lima in December

Beyond the main districts, there are several other activities that are particularly enjoyable in December’s sunny weather. A short trip to Parque de la Reserva is a highlight of the season. Its famous Magic Water Circuit is a must-see. The fountains light up in a spectacular show of water and color, and in December, the park draws large crowds who enjoy the warmer nights and the grand display.

For animal lovers, a visit to Parque de las Leyendas (Legends Park), Lima’s main zoo, is a good choice. Its wide variety of animals and spacious grounds make for a great day trip.

Finally, for a more casual cultural activity, you can observe locals in their element. In many parks, including Parque San José in Jesus Maria and the parks of Pueblo Libre, you will find groups of people, often older men, gathered around tables playing chess. This is a common sight and a peaceful way to absorb a slice of local life.

In December, Lima shows a different side of itself. As it becomes a city full of light, sun, and good cheer. From the historic plazas to the quiet districts and the lively coast, the holiday spirit makes it a special time for any visitor.
