If you’re planning to visit Lima in August, consider staying in Pueblo Libre. It’s a fantastic time to visit. While many travelers focus on the Fiestas Patrias celebrations in late July, this district maintains a vibrant, festive energy all year round.
August in Pueblo Libre offers a unique blend of historical commemorations, cultural celebrations, and rich flavors. This makes it a perfect destination for any visitor to Lima.
A Legacy of History and Community
Mid-August is a particularly significant time for Pueblo Libre, as the district celebrates its anniversary. These community-led celebrations honor a history that stretches back centuries.
Pueblo Libre’s story began with Gonzalo Taulichusco. He was the last indigenous governor of Lima. And Taulichusco ceded his land for the Santa María Magdalena Church to be built. It’s a site you can still visit today on our free walking tour of the district.
Centuries later, Pueblo Libre became the epicenter of a different kind of history, when José de San Martín established his headquarters here in the Quinta de los Libertadores. San Martín was so moved by the patriotism of its people, that he renamed the area ‘Pueblo Libre,’ or ‘Free Town.’
Yet it wasn’t just San Martín who called Pueblo Libre home. Simon Bolívar, Manuela Saenz and Antonio Jose de Sucre also lived in Pueblo Libre while in Lima. And that’s why the district is colloquially known as the ‘Villa de los Libertadores.’
The anniversary celebrations are a chance to see this incredible legacy come alive. Locals and visitors alike honor this unique past with pride and festivity. And if you’re a history nerd like me, you’ll love Pueblo Libre in August.

A Coffee Lover’s Paradise: Cafesazo Peruano
One of the standout events in August in Pueblo Libre is the Cafesazo Peruano. This is Peru’s largest coffee festival. It transforms the district into a hub for coffee lovers.
Cafesazo Peruano is a multi-day festival that coincides with Peruvian Coffee Day, which is celebrated on the fourth Friday of August. The festival brings together coffee producers, roasters, and baristas from all over Peru. They showcase the best of Peru’s acclaimed coffee.
In 2025, the Cafesazo Peruano festival will take place on August 23rd and 24th. It will be held at the centrally located Parque 3 de Octubre, where you’ll also find the Paseo de los Vecinos Ilustres de Pueblo Libre.
Visitors will be able to sample a vast array of specialty Peruvian coffees. Yet, you’ll also get to learn about different brewing methods. And you can meet the passionate people behind Peru’s coffee industry. It’s a true sensory experience and a must-do for anyone who appreciates a fantastic cup of coffee.
